Bad Leopard, Bad!

Leopard

Before I begin the entry details, I just want to make it clear – I Still Love Apple! Screw windows, big time!

It took 3 installs to get it right but it was all worth it. I’ll write about the issues that matter and the features you get after all the hassle.

Principally, I would always wait for Service Pack or in Mac terms 10.5.1 release before switching OS. We all have been through it and know how nasty it can get. I can feel you people who switched to Vista and still repenting it.

The issues:

  • Always check your media/disk.
In my case it was faulty and would get stuck in the middle of verify process. Instead of stopping there and went ahead with the install. It did in fact installed the whole thing and after the Congrates, the Mac froze on the restart. Was it an error due to the media or Upgrade, can’t figure it out – but lesson learnt! Bad media hurts.
  • Say No to Upgrade
Its written on the wall, Don’t upgrade. Either go for Archive & Install (Apples choice) or Clean Install (My choice)
  • Firmware and HD
Before heading south, do check the latest firmware for your Mac and give Disk utility a peep into your HD condition

The installation process was, I would say boring. Mac people could have added some self promotion about what new features we are getting in this mega install. It took about 1.5 hrs for the Clean & Install method I chose. After the install, Software Updates picked up Itunes, Quicktime and some little patches to update – presto!

So, What I got after the Hassle!

You might have read it a million times already but people, Sanity is here via Time Machine. An awesome backup software making sure that we lazy @&&es keep on going about our normal way of life and yet still don’t lose data.

The Spaces app is something which Linux folks have become used to. But its a welcome addition to the Mac world. It makes like easier and much cleaner to have 4 desktops available to you just like 4 PC’s. RAM upgrade is a must.

Quick View! Awesome, just simply awesome tool to quickly find that doc you wrote at 2AM some weeks ago. Cover Flow is also a nice addition to quickly view files.

The over all look and feel of the new OS is much refined. I feel its a bit slow and some app’s do get stalled. I have heard people having hard time with it, I haven’t, yet!

The news is out, Apple is sending us 10.5.1 any time now. Then I’ll update it on my own Mac. See I was smart to try it out on my Wife’s macbook :)
