Freehand MX not working in Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.2!

I checked all over the web and somehow feel I’m the only one whose facing this problem. This is what’s happening my end:

I click on the icon, the icon bounces for about 20 times and the Freehand menu bar appears and right when it says “Opening Panels” in the loading splash screen, I receive “The Application quit unexpectedly”

I have done the following steps:

  • Uninstalled/deleted the application and whatever associated files were in Library/Cache/Preferences
  • Restarted the machine
  • Re-Installed the software, interestingly I was not asked for the Serial
  • Same error happens at the same exact point

Then I went ahead and installed the application in another Macbook, which previosuly never had Freehand installed in it. It is also updated to 10.5.2 and I faced the same error.

Alas! I’m unable to use freehand on Mac, had to resort to use it on a Windows box to get the work done. If anyone has a clue to what could be the error and know how to resolve it, please help me.

  • Guess what! I just did my 10.5.3 update and here we go, Freehand MX has started working!

Thanks! Apple or anyone who fixed it!

  • 10.5.3 has not resolved this issue for me. Freehand MX installed fine and launched out and allowed me to install sn but a few launches later same problem as above :( any idea?

  • I have had the same issue with 10.5.2 and now with 10.5.3 on my MBP. I have trashed it and reloaded it with no success. bummer.

My imac is still running 10.4.11 and freehand works on it just fine. if you find out any answers please pass them along. thanks.

  • Yes, adobe is trying to make everyone shift to the unintuitive illustrator. Freehand has always been the best in this field. I wonder if anyone will ever beat freehand 3.0 though, for me this was at its best. I am not an illustrator but a graphic designer and the limited tool set and options made this a perfect tool. Pity that they put loads and loads of shit in software for no apparent reason. I am struggling to use illustrator, pity it doesn’t share the same interface as indesign which beats quark hands down.

  • Oh yes couldn’t agree more. You’ll never get freehand working in leopard and adobe doesn’t give a fuck. I am searching for an alternative and i’ll let you knwo if their is one.

  • afternoon chaps, well here is the lean mean vector program you leopards have been looking for, its called lineform. enjoy

  • FH 10.0 working

    Hi,

My Educational Freehand vers. 10.0 from 2001 works without issues in Leopard 10.5.4.

  • Hi Charlie,
I am about to instal Leopard Mac OSX 10.5.4 into my MacBook Pro running on Mac OSX 10.4.11. My main concern is, will it work with Freehand version 10CT traditional chinese edition. From what you mentioned, you have no problem at all running Freehand ver 10, any problem printing to pdf?
    Thanks
    Jack

  • Yes, printing to pdf seems to be troublesome, for some reason It doesn’t work?

    Charlie///

  • Same deal here, cannot print to pdf. Only alternative I’ve found is to rip all the fonts in the document to paths and export as a Macintosh eps…and then distill the eps’s.

For anyone having problems with fonts when printing Freehand in Leopard…make sure your fonts are in the library/fonts folder and not in the user/library/fonts folder.

    Warning…rant ahead!

You are right, Adobe doesn’t give a fart about their customers. They keep their programmers employed by having them continually come up with gimmicky shit to add to their software (i.e. Illustrator). Eventually they will have big bloaty useless messes like Quark…and then, since they are the big software monopolizers that they are, we’ll really be screwed.

  • …. Doy la orden de impresión desde Freehand MX (v11.0) y nada… No imprime…. La solución ¡Convertir el archivo a PDF!…. o convertir los textos a PAT. En realidad no entiendo nada sobre una solución práctica… Dios les bendiga…

  • except printing freehand mx works fine for me on osx 10.5.6
i print via pdf – i`ll never give up using freehand! :::-)
