The Power of the Social Internet!
Facebook and other social platforms are abuzz over the news of death of a 3 year old little angel at Doctors Hospital, Lahore. There are causes, groups and what not out there on Facebook. Traditional media has also covered the story but then its old news there already. Whereas, on Facebook the news gets rebirth after every few seconds, when some user Likes it, Shares it, becomes a Fan of the Page or joins a Group for the cause. What this gruesome act by the said hospital proves that they care about no one’s life, but only gathering said money from afflicted families. It cannot be denied that using the latest tool available, Internet, people can change and force perceptions.
In this case the father of the poor child has a website with latest news coming up. And the same site gets Liked & Linked several times a day. With the public pressure building up, the Chief Justice of Pakistan and Chief Minister of Punjab have both taken strong notice of this act. May God have mercy on the poor soul and give bereavement to the anguished parents.
Similarly a few months earlier Twitter became the sword of the public and citizen journalists alike over the Chief Justice issue. Being unable to SMS and have the issue broadcasted correctly over the traditional media, the #Longmarch hash tag was raving in Twiiter’s Trending Topics. Many other local things followed among them #GoGreen was also one of them.
A local internet merchant had to face the wrath of the social power over a dispute claimed by a customer. Within hours the internet was filled with the hate messages forcing the management and client to solve the issue amicably. Once again the social power was very evidently displayed and practiced.
Ladies and gentlemen! May I thus pronounce, the Internet has arrived in Pakistan. One very active factor in fueling this fire is the mobile revolution already well established and strong. As more and more people switch to Internet enabled devices, you see more action happening on the social scene. Who know’s what, maybe the next movement will be the highly get the dogs out
