So what its going to be – Android or Iphone?

I know this is not the best time to right time to ask this question, due to 27th Jan Apple’s event and rumored iphone 4.0 release. But the question is much broader in nature and new releases, which will come one after another will continue to gain advantage over the other platform, at least for a certain duration – I guess shortening to weeks, if its months today.
I have been late in jumping over the iphone bandwagon. I could have done with version 1 but restrained myself from joining the club then. Now, iphone is nearing the 4th milestone with promises of many missing features. Today, the picture is completely changed. The monopoly iphone enjoyed is now challenged by non other than Google, which had previously enjoyed exclusive deals when the iphone platform was launched.
Google’s latest step the release of Nexus One is indeed a bold step. Now everyone is comparing the 2 phones on a microscopic level from weight to height, battery life to display, from mega pixels to mega bytes. The competition is heating up, extremely.
The real competition is between the platforms. Google’s ambitious plans have resulted in the androdization of the mobile industry. Its about 50+ devices vs. 1 iphone. And from the recent looks at CES 2010, so many more devices are coming out.
At the end of the day, the 2 parameters which will decide the long term market winner are Platform Openness and How the Developers stick to the platform. Apple’s App store bills millions of $’s for small shop owners to huge corporations. For Android, there are multiple platforms coming out. The app platform will really decide the winners. Apple has an advantage by creating such a fantastic eco-system, mastering the user selection and acquisition experience through itunes.
Interestingly, both Nexus One and iphone are not officially available in Pakistan at the time of writing this post. For now, I’ll be happy with my Blackberry, another player trying hard to carve out its own niche’ in the App platform market.
